NW Ag Plastics' Advantages

Mark Nedrow, Former Yakima County Solid Waste Program Supervisor, knows first hand that "we are a disposable nation."

Far too many ag plastic containers are sent to landfills, but the container recycling program is making progress. "When we first started, hardly anyone showed up in Yakima. Now we're getting substantial growth."
Mark Nedrow
Ag container recycling's greatest advantages:
  • recycles a product for a second life
  • increases grower environmental awareness
  • saves growers the costs of landfill 'tipping' fees

"Growers recycling containers are recognized as those who are doing the right thing, not polluting their property or a landfill," says Mark Nedrow.
Mark Conner, Ranch Aviation, Othello, with his Rockwell Thrush Commander, is a third generation aerial applicator. Mark, and Flite Level 0, work together in storing decontaminated plastic containers in a storage unit at the airport until the NW Ag Plastics chipper arrives.
Before the recycling, containers were burned. Later, they were sent to landfills. But with the amount we use today it would fill up a landfill really fast. Recycling is the best solution.
Northwest Ag Plastics comes to our airport three times a year. The last time it was eight or nine thousand containers.

The volume of recycled containers has grown every year since the program started, but still far too much ag plastic is going to county landfills.
The less waste stream in the landfills, the better.
Ginny Prest, Former WSU agronomist
WaPC Past President
Ginny Prest, former WSU ag researcher, sees recycling pesticide containers as 'a win-win situation.' For the growers, recycling is a positive option for the environment.
We've provided a home for plastic pesticide containers that are decontaminated.
Gail Amos
Washington State Department of Agriculture

Gail Amos notes that alternatives to container recycling are slim. Any containers that are not decontaminated must be kept under lock and key, and it is illegal to burn containers.
Crop Advisor Greg Jackson has been involved in plastic recycling from the 'early days.' For him, Northwest Ag Plastics provides an important customer service.

Northwest Ag Plastics Inc. provides another opportunity for our company to demonstrate environmental stewardship.
We are happy to have them provide this care and service to our customers.
